Professionally, in his 18+ years in China, Richard has managed multiple foreign invested Wholly Foreign Owned and Sino-Foreign Joint Ventures and set up companies in China and Hong Kong.
Academically, Richard has been supervising professional doctorate students, and professionally coaching China-based business executives about managing companies, as well as aspects of doing business in China.
Biography
Richard is an experienced economist specializing in business and entrepreneurship within the Greater China region.
In his professional career, Richard served Economic Counselor at the Netherlands Enterprise Agency and has been seconded as Chief Representative at the Netherlands Trade and Investment Office in Nanjing, where he promoted bilateral trade and investments between the Netherlands and China’s Jiangsu Province. In this role, Richard provided support to Dutch enterprises doing business in China and facilitated trade with Chinese companies.
His other China based roles include Managing Director at a Dutch multinational in the installation systems industry, Finance Director Asia Pacific at a German multinational in the automotive industry, and Finance Manager Asia at a Danish multinational in the maritime industry.
With a distinguished academic background, including a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) with honors and a Master of Philosophy in Business Research (MPhil) with distinction, Richard has a deep understanding of the Chinese economic and investment landscape. Additionally, Richard holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Bachelor of Economics (BEc) and is certified in Higher Education Teaching from Harvard University’s Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning.
For the last 18+ years, Richard has worked in the Greater China region, India and South Korea, becoming a recognized regional expert in investment and trade. He has been honored with numerous credentials, such as China’s Jiangsu Province Youth Friendship Award, International Friendship Ambassador for Nanjing Municipality, Ambassador for Investment Promotion for Yangzhou Municipality, and Ambassador for Investment Promotion for Nanjing’s Gulou and Jianye districts.

Richard is the author of multiple books, part of the China Business Series, as well as academic and professional articles on business and entrepreneurship in the Greater China region. In his books Richard aims to provide a comprehensive view on business in China and with China-based enterprises, combining academic research, inputs from regulations, best business practices and first-hand experiences.
